A few quick updates on coverage of the Cindy Jo Coleman murder here in Houtzdale. A quick check of teh Googles reveals the first blog (that I've found) other than my own to speak out on the story: A blog called News of Doom picked it up and has a bit of commentary to go with it. Yeah, this kid could very well be looking at the needle, and I can't think of anyone in this state who would sit on the jury for this case, hear how this kid killed his mother, and NOT throw the book at him.
A bit of ha ha, Froggy98's website had a blurb about it on their FrogNet News page (find it yourself, I don't like Froggy, so no link for them), but apparently it's rotated out of their limited live page cache. Oh well, it would have only been a paragraph at most, and would have probably run along the lines of a summary the Altoona Mirror's article, anyway. In short, nothing new from a crappy source.
Years ago, when the Kimmy Jo Dotts (wow, women with Jo as a middle name tend to get killed around here...) Murder went down, Montel Williams did a show dedicated to the case, where I saw my friend Clint on the air, and heard a phone call from a very stupid/ignorant Dawn Lanager and her mother. I wonder which tabloid show will pick this story up first. Oprah? Maury? JERRY?!? We'll see, I guess.
While I'm inclined to continue to dig up new junk on this story, today is, in fact, St. Patrick's Day, and I can't help but want to step away from the keyboard and search box for a while and relax. I'll be at Electric Avenue tonight, watching everyone else get hammered while I drink my Sierra Mist 'on the rocks,' straight. I'll be back tomorrow, though, hopefully with more. On the bright side, I won't have to battle through any sort of hangover to do it...

Cats In The Cradle
The weekend has brought new information in the Jessie Coleman Campbell murder story, as teh Internets (which is a series of tubes) have finally caught up to me, at least when it comes to actually having anything online at all. Granted, they're a bit more well-connected than a lowly citizen-journalist such as myself, so they're a bit more in the know. But hey, at least I got to break it to the digital world, not a chance I get often (or one that I get soon enough to act on).
GantDaily says that the murder itself happened at Woodward Terrace Apartments. The police presence my friend confirmed for me at McAteer was most likely a posse hunting Jessie down at his girlfriend's apartment (that being Kacey).
The first mention of Kacey, however, comes in the form of an article from the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat which gives us some more details about the killing itself. While Kacey is only mentioned as "his girlfriend," it goes on to say that there's a stolen computer involved. Jessie took a 5lb plastic weight and clubbed his mother with it when she wouldn't wake up, then slashed her throat and wrists.
While she lay there, choking on her own blood, Jessie apparently sat and read the bible to her. Funny, since Jessie doesn't strike me as a Bible sort of kid...
Of course, The Progress is late to the party. And even though they're the most local paper to the story, their coverage, as always, is lacking.
And finally, the plot thickens as we get our first mention of Kacey (left) by name outside of this blog. According to the Altoona Mirror (who also supplied Jessie's CCJ booking photo, above left), it was Kacey who blew the whistle. Around 2AM (which is pretty much the same time I was near her apartment picking up diapers from a friend for my son), Kacey came back to her apartment hysterical, and called the police.
While I still can't garner Kacey's status at the moment (all I have to go on is whoever used her Yahoo to message me told me she, too, was in CCJ), the article does mention that Kacey was involved in some sort of planning. She never mentioned anything like this to me.
In fact, her's what WAS mentioned to me by her in the weeks leading up to Cindy's murder: Around three weeks ago, she revealed to me that she was cheating on her boyfriend (at the time) with Jessie, the first I'd ever heard of him at all. She did say that she was under a ton of stress, but never went into details, even when I asked her. After that, her account went dark for about a week and a half, popping back up on Thursday morning with whoever was in control sending me the message that started this whole fiasco.
The computer, I understand. Since Kacey had broken up with her previous boyfriend, she lacked a computer, hence her Yahoo account not coming online for a week. Cindy's computer (honestly, she won't be using it now) would fill that void, though I highly doubt that Jessie killed her because Kacey wanted a way to get online. Pretty weak motive for murder right there.
No, there's something deeper here. This Jessie, I'm willing to bet, is one seriously fucked up kid. And I aim to get to the bottom of why he is. Why? Because, in a very distant but still-significant way, his anger is like my own when I was that age. Understanding that anger, and understanding Jessie Coleman Campbell, brings us one step closer to understanding why so many kids are flipping out and racking up body counts these days.
For the record, I love my mother endlessly, and would never, EVER dream of killing her, or anyone else, for that matter.
As I gather more info, I'll post it here. Week should be interesting...

Oiled As A Diesel Train
While Houtzdale is the place where I was raised, it is not my home.
Who would want to call this little shit-nowhere town home? Everything here revolves around two key body parts: Lips and Fists. The last few months have inspired me to give some attention to the latter.
In Houtzdale, the measure of a man isn't in his job, his family, or what good he does for society in general. No, the true measure of a man in this redneck-wannabe Huh?ville is much, much more primitive: Your status is based on who's asses you've kicked, how many you've kicked, or how many times you've had your ass handed to you.
Like any kid, I got in my share of fights. I won some and lost more, but in the end, I'm just a nonviolent person at heart. Yes, sometimes I rage, but what human doesn't? I have the presence of mind to keep that primordial, wild part of the human animal at bay, suppressing it in favor of a more refined, somewhat socially acceptable demeanor. What does that make me?
Ask any Houtzdale "tough guy" and they'll tell you that makes me a "pussy." And simply because these "tough guys" can beat my ass, they think it somehow makes them better than me.
FAIL
To understand this mindset, you have to understand the Houtzdale Drunk, because 99 times out of 100, their muscles come from the large quantities of alcohol they've consumed since they got home from work, if they even work at all.
Around 5pm, these hot shots show up at your local bar and proceed to order the first of what will be many bottles of domestic piss that they, of course, think is the best beer out there. First of all, for fuck's sake, that's not beer! Good beer isn't yellow: it has at least SOME good brown color to it. Good beer is also not watered down to the consistency of soda. Right there, these guys have lost valuable style points.
These tough guys, thinking they're (insert deity here)'s gift to women, will most likely start hitting on the pretty girls in the bar. And it's not just limited to female patrons, either: bar and wait staff are all potential targets of their beer-induced Casanova-ism. When they're shot down, they'll return to the bar, and as buddies begin to flow in and get a buzz on, they'll strike up conversations about their favorite subject in the whole world: kicking ass.
"Well, I beat this guy's ass, beat the fuck out of this other guy; I remember this one time I was kicking this guy's teeth in and... Oh, that pussy, I don't know how many times I've punched that fucker..." It really goes on and on. It's almost as if all they know how to do is drink beer, get shot down by women and fight people. After a few rounds of this, and now with wingmen in tow, they'll go back to trying to impress upon the ladies how much they can "rock their world" with cliche pickup lines and drunken hugging.
Denied by the women that Budweiser tells them they deserve, they get cranky, and when they get cranky, guess what they want to do: Kick some ass. Surprised? Neither is anyone else, really. What these tough guys will do is find someone in the bar whom they figure won't be able to beat their ass, and go pick a fight with them for whatever stupid reason they can dream up. Yep, they'll pick on someone weaker than them (and yes, I've been that weaker guy a number of times, though actual fights resulting from those situations are really quite a rare breed) intentionally, mostly because they know (despite the alcohol's amplification of their already retarded minds) that they can't lose in that situation.
Barring that, the tough guy will most likely pick a fight with someone who randomly bumps them, accidentally spills their drink, or even a guy who manages to start up a conversation with a girl that shot him down earlier in the night. If this scenario doesn't pan out, though, and no fights happen, then our friend the tough guy will find another outlet for his frustrations: Local Fat Chicks.
Yep, they've had so many brews and warped their minds around their own failures so badly that they'll resort to chubby chasing. Since the hot girls won't give them the time of day, and bigger girls around here are desperate as hell to have ANY man, toughy boys will, at the end of the night, start grinding with albino milk duds, their confidence in their attractiveness to the opposite sex renewed, albeit impaired by what has now become an over-a-12-pack night.
If they get to take Moby Dud home and get some play, the cycle then starts over. Work (or PlayStation if they don't work), then bar. This time, there's the addition of the story of his most recent sexual conquest, although the female lead is recast as someone less Mama Cass and more Reese Witherspoon. But again, the outcome is the same.
Drinking, fights, and trying to get laid. The lives of too many people around my area, and sadly, around the nation.
They'd find it hard to believe that I have a steady girlfriend, a (step)son, I get laid on a regular basis, and that I make a decent living doing things that I love to do. Why? Because I'm a "pussy," and there's no way a "pussy" like me could possibly have a better life than someone who can kick my ass. Well, tough guy, too bad. I like my life, and yes, I think it's better than yours. I'm not obsessed with kicking someone's ass every time the mood hits me. I pride myself on being refined enough to use the head on my shoulders instead of the fists below them. It's all about staying above.
But hey. If you want to stay down below, be my guest.

Caturday Night Special
Ahhh, Caturday. I has it. You can now has. Story here, Fark Thread here. Enjoyment: Let me show you it.

Heh. Peep Show...
Small Town
Well, things have pretty much settled in the aftermath of Thursday morning's insanity. The story so far:
From what I've gathered, Jessie has been wandering about for some time saying he was going to kill his mother. While I haven't pinpointed a reason yet, it looks like no one took him seriously, with the possible exception of Kacey. In the end, WTAJ (CBS10, Altoona) reported it that evening as Jessie acting alone, with no mention of Kacey's involvement. That was a bit of a relief, seeing as how I'm obviously very worried about someone I consider a good friend.
Cause of death is likely to be blood loss from slash wounds to the throat and wrists, but I've heard some reports of possible blunt force trauma as well, which wasn't reported by WTAJ during their 5pm newscast. If that's the case, then Cindy suffered a very frightening death at the hands of her own son.
But what would possess a child to kill his own mother, let alone do it in such a violent and nasty way? One possible scenario is that, mad at his mother for some reason and sent over his breaking point by something, he beat the ever-loving tar out of her and, scared of the consequences of that, killed her to silence her. If that's the case, wrong move, just made things worse.
What makes a kid rage against his mom like that? Any number of things, really, could - either on their own or, more likely, in tandem with more - contribute to a child's anger. Jessie is a part of a very selfish and spoiled generation, the grandchildren of the Boomers and children of TV Generation parents. With doting grandparents desperate to stay young by living through their grandkids, and parents who are either unwilling or unable to connect with them on much of any level, its really no surprise how these kids fall off the boat.
Most adopt a "Fuck The World" mentality, refusing to care about this or that or the other thing and only focusing on their narrow view of the world around them. They feel trapped by their surroundings, with a fear of inability to escape their mundane existence in their tiny niche of the world. They assault their ears with the overly-aggressive, testosterone-fueled anthems of Hardcore music, and at the same time feed their depression with the whiny crybaby sounds of Emo. The "fuck it all" attitude leads to indifference to school, work, life, and pretty much anything that isn't branded PlayStation or Aeropostale.
In effect, they've desensitized themselves to sympathy, empathy, and have failed to find outlets for the wellspring of emotions swimming around inside of them. Social interaction, even among family, is retarded, and bridges (rather than being burned) aren't even built in the first place.
With a parent who, while trying their best but still falling short, can't make a connection with their kid, the other side of the bridge doesn't even get past the foundation phase. With neither side making any effort, any emotional bond is all but erased.
The kids end up reacting negatively to any parental "intrusion," distrusting and coming to resent any effort by their parents for anything, over time becoming a conditioned response. Kid will run off, do what he/she pleases while they're out, consequences be damed because the parents lack the skills to enforce any punishments. Grounded or no, kids are right back out doing lord knows what.
But what drove Jessie to kill his mother, and in such a violent manner, is something that needs to be looked at in order to understand the true nature of the generation gap kids and parents these days have to deal with. If I were to go any further with this subject, though, I'd never get any sleep.
And yes, I know, it's Caturday. I'm going to try my best this time around...
UPDATE: 6:43am - Whoopsie. Eric too tired, forget to check teh Googles. Here's a Centre Daily Times blurb, although it's fairly limited at this time. Looks like I'm the only one releasing names other than perp and vic. Can that get me in trouble? Eh, fuck em.

BREAKING NEWS: MURDER IN HOUTZDALE
From what sources I have, signs point to holy shit.
All the information I have right now says this: Sometime very recently (probably last night or this morning), Kacey Fisher and Jessie Coleman Campbell killed his mother, Cindy Jo Coleman. Both are in Clearfield County Jail, held for murder 1, most likely. Currently, Jessie is being held without bond in Clearfield County Jail. I have yet to confirm the whereabouts of Kacey.
I wish it weren't true, but it is. Kacey was a friend of mine.
The who and the why will all become clear in time as I try to gather the facts. But I have one source who told me essentially that story, and another source who lives in the area who confirmed the heavy PSP presence since this morning, making it highly unlikely that the first source is wrong.
While I master a home video DVD for Teddy's grandmother, I'll be hitting teh Googles for whatever links and news I can find. For now, though, it looks like I'm the first to hit the net with this story.
UPDATE: 4pm: - Links to Kacey's Yahoo Profile and MySpace account. Kacey is at least 22 now, possibly 23, though I never really knew when her birthday was. From what I've heard, this Jessie kid is 20, and that's all I have on him at the moment. Kacey's MySpace page hasn't been update for a week, but still has pictures of her and her ex boyfriend on it.
An excerpt from Kacey's blog, dated April of last year:
Todays the day to start life over. I have no clue on what to do or how to live my life normal, or in the normal sense. I"m tired of fuckin around, i'm tired or wasting time and my life on the petty arguments, the fights and the tears i've had to cry. I want to start fresh, start anew, open my eyes and get a clear view. A new perspective. I need a challenge. I don't want to run anymore, and death is not an option. I miss my friends and my family, I miss being me. I feel very alone, depressed, scared and everything in between. Somebody, Anybody, please help me start my first new day or freedom.I guess that won't be the case now. She'll be starting a new life, but not the one she'd hoped for. When the motive comes out, I'm sure I'll be able to piece together what went wrong...
UPDATE 2: 4:21pm - Via another source, though it has yet to be confirmed, Jessie's mother's cause of death was the old ear-to-ear grin. Man, something went really wrong here, and I aim to find out what the fuck it was. I need to find Jordan...
UPDATE 3: 4:30pm - Found Jessie
Interesting Observation: On Kacey's MySpace, the song is "The Kill" by 30 Seconds to Mars. On Jessie's, it's "Gravedigger" by Willie Nelson. Talk about creepy...
On a completely different note, my good friend Justin ended up in the hospital this morning, and they're keeping him for a bit for observation. For the most part, he's fine, but tests will reveal more. Get well soon, Old Man!

Harry Potter and the Protracted Film Series... Um... Of Doom, Or Something...
News has reached the Muggle masses that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the final installment in the storied Harry Potter series, will have its film adaptation split into two seperate movies, thereby making it at least a three hour epic (FT). Chances are, though, that each film will most likely run closer two hours a clip.
The reason for this basically gives away the fact that these will be two (slightly) longer films than the other six: There aren't really many subplots you can cut out of Potter 7. The first film covered Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone almost in its entirety, since it was the shortest of the books by far. Weren't that many cuts from Chamber, either, but some did stand out a bit. From Prisoner on, though, large chunks were apparent, and honestly, they really didn't impact the central plot all that much (although cutting out Ron playing Quidditch (a big character progression for him) and Hermione's S.P.E.W. work (which highlights both Dobby and Kreacher more as well as Miss Granger) are arguable in many circles).
I would much have rather them done the actual Dumbledore's Army outing from the book rather than blame it on poor Cho, but what can you do, right? It's Hollywood: They'll fuck anything up (See Ang Lee's The Hulk or Star Wars Prequels), even if it's with tiny little oversights like that one.
Half-blood Prince will be coming soon, and we get some big moments in that one, but I'm not doubting that there will be important stuff cut. My guess is Harry's relationship with Cho will become the stuff of reflective dialogue, but you can't avoid the Harry-Ginny storyline, since it plays such a huge role in Potter 7/8. And oh yeah: SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE. Duh. If you don't know that by now, you've been living under a rock.
On the bright side, that's two more trips to The Rowland for me, Angel and Teddy, which will be fun. By the time Potter's 7 and 8 roll out (2010 and 2011 respectively), he'll have seen the first six, and hopefully read at least the first book (which, of course, Daddy has). Like I was born into a world just discovering Star Wars (it came out summer of 77, I came out that November), he was born into a world in love with a boy wizard at school with his friends, carrying the weight of the wizarding world on his shoulders and showing kids that, no matter what you have to deal with, it can be faced and dealt with in turn: From staring down the Dark Lord to just growing up and learning about regular life.
That's the true magic of Harry Potter...

You Fucked Up
No, the decline of the modern Record Industry didn't start with Metallica's whining about Napster. No, it started long before that, and even goes back to the very beginnings of recorded music itself.
Via Fark (FT) comes this Blender article detailing the 20 Biggest Fuck-ups in Recording Industry history, and wow, are these some glaring scars if I've ever seen them. Of course, Napster is mentioned as #1, but there are some choice brain farts in there as well, proving once and for all that record executives have their heads up their asses.

Shameless Nerd Gushing, Vol. 2
I know, I know. You know, I tend to say "I know" alot. Kinda like Justin likes to say "hold on." But yes, I know, yet another weekend where I dropped the ball. Things aren't the greatest in Prophyt World, but I'm working on changing that, and I'll be back to normal soon.
In the meantime, today's Nerd Gushing comes to us from fellow Blogger blog (Blogger blog? Did I just type that? Oh dear...) Blasphemes, via Fark (FT): The pressing issue for the day is Just how long was Luke Skywalker on Degobah with Yoda during Empire? It's since grown into a discussion about the physics and stellar geography of the Star Wars Galaxy (which, don't forget, is far, far away...), and we've even managed to work in some real world math.
Yes, we're nerds. Now go, participate in the Nerdgasm!

Shameless Nerd Gushing, Vol. 1
Too much geek stuff to justify multiple posts, so I've decided to cram it all together into one while it's all fresh in my mind. Today, I'm geeking out hardcore, and I figure it's not too bad an idea to share. After all, you all come back here and read, so part of my insignificant life must be somewhat interesting to you all, right? Well, here's a couple of tidbits.
BitTorrent Blah Blah + Wheaton Goodness = Postworthy
It's been a little over a month since I began seeding Wil's CactusCon performance on Mininova, and in that time, I've tossed up a ratio of 17.172 over 705MB. Not bad, not bad at all. A little over 17 copies worth of data came from me, and for that, I'm proud. I'd call that a successful torrent, since I've seen seeders and leechers come and go rather frequently. It's out there, and it's awesome to know that I had a wee tiny hand in spreading the good word that is Wil.
And speaking of Wil, if you missed it, you really need to check out his Keynote Address from last year's Penny Arcade Expo (PAX). Dare to compare: the man's good at what he does.
How Could You Not Want That?!?
Anime fans are a picky lot. We care about the art form, and if an American production company hacks and mangles a series too much in trying to Americanize it, we get a bit miffed. Such was the early doom of FUNimation, the production company behind the later release of Dragonball Z and, since, alot more series that show they learned from their early mistakes. Their first dub of Dragonball was an atrocity, and I have the DVDs to prove it.
But sometimes, hacking and mangling for the sake of an American audience can be a good thing, as is the case with FUNimation's recent redux of Crayon Shin-chan. Some of the more notable changes include:
- Shin's school has been changed into The Happy Funtime American School. This allows for name changes for the teachers, a complete heritage change for the principal, and the introduction of modern American humor to make up for the fact that Shin-chan is over 15 years old, series-wise.
- While the original show focused on Japanese social issues through the eyes of 5 year old Shin and those around him, the FUNimation dub scraps all that and goes for the testicles when it comes to outrageous humor. It's very, VERY adult oriented. Sex jokes, sexual orientation jokes, toilet humor, the whole nine yards.
Myth of the Prophyt
After some discussion amongst my inner circle of geeks and geek-stuff enthusiasts, I've decided to make an attempt at building a small side business in the tech sector. It's not the 2GPro that I've envisioned for the last two years, but it's a good start in the right direction, and should be relatively easy to get started. I've got the attention of the people I need to back me up, and I think we're about ready to roll. I'll try and make an announcement soon, but for now, I have to keep it in the realm of Myths.... Which, by the way, is your only clue as to what I'm going to try and accomplish...
Retune The World
I've been checking out alot of new Anime recently (beyond Shin-chan), and I've found quite a few new favorites in the mix. I highly recommend RahXephon if you can get your hands on it. Big robots, great music, and solid voice acting on both sides of the big pond. Another new favorite is Full Metal Panic! Funny stuff right there, and plenty more big robots for those that like such things.
Soon, I'll be starting Love Hina, a series I've put off checking out for far too long, as well as reacquainting myself with Vision of Escaflowne. Beyond that, I have so much more, but I don't really have the time to do so. Being a dad has its demands, after all...
Hope you all enjoyed my little geekout. See you tomorrow for Caturday, I promise!

Thank You Very Fucking Much
George W. Bush and his flunkies can all go to Hell.
While they got greedy - the power grab after 9/11, the illegal wars since that have served no other purpose than to rob the American taxpayers and stuff the money in the pockets of a few corporate fat cats, and the failed war on terrorism that has done nothing more than keep the people distracted - the rest of the world was changing. They missed it. They dropped the ball. They were so fucking short-sighted and selfish that they let the powder keg get filled right under their noses.
Ladies and Gentlemen, it's Cold War 2: Electric Boogaloo.
Whoever wins this November, I pity them. They have to clean up this mess somehow, and deal with the new power bloc that's emerging out of the ashes of the Communist East. The real problem is, if what I think will happen happens, then the other side will have a full 1/3 of the world's population at its disposal, and it's going to be very, very brutal. To give you some idea, here's what will happen if the unthinkable does come to pass: If Russia, China, and North Korea form a new collective power:
The US Economy will take a serious hit. Why? Flip over anything you own and look for the "Made In" sticker. Chances are it says "Made in China," doesn't it. Yep. We've spent so many years cutting China a break because they can supply a desperate workforce willing to work for cents on the dollar American workers would demand. The bastard children of NAFTA, along with Outsourcing and a false sense of smug security in our financial dealings, have served to make America's corporations dependent on China. If China suddenly shuts its doors as it did after Mao, the US will be forced to rethink in a god damned hurry, and I seriously doubt the greedy fuckwads that call themselves CEOs will be able to do that kind of pressure thinking.
Even though the original Cold War is over, Russia is still a nuclear (not Nukular, fucktard) power. Add the ambitions of North Korea and the burgeoning Chinese populations' energy demands, nuclear proliferation in that region of the world will most likely skyrocket, and it'll do so largely unchecked.
While Cuba isn't what it used to be, China and North Korea aren't exactly a world away like we tend to think they are. An alliance would give them control of a sizable chunk of the Eastern Hemisphere, and the capability to have a formidable presence in the Western half on the planet as well. They'll have all the room in the world to place whatever ICBMs they want. And with Russia being a space power already, coupled with China's emerging space program, rocketry isn't going to be feeble for very long. China's workforce, suddenly appropriated to the whims of Putin and Moscow, could do quite a bit for military production, to boot.
By focusing its resources in the entirely wrong direction, blinded by greed and personal ambition, the United States Government has allowed the possibility of this alliance to not only take root, but grow for a little while unhindered. All because you just HAD to invade Iraq, you just HAD to take taxpayer money and stuff it in your own pockets, you just HAD to do it YOUR way.
Now what, genius? You don't care, because come January 20th, 2009, you're not responsible anymore, are you. You got what you wanted, and now you're going to ride off into the sunset, lighting your cigars with C-notes and laughing all the way to the bank because you pulled of the fleecing of the century.
And what does that say for you, America? Doesn't say a thing about me, I was against all of this from the word go. Not once have I supported ANYTHING this administration has done - apart from supporting my American soldiers, who deserve it.
Which gives me the ability to say "I FUCKING TOLD YOU IDIOTS SO."
When you're all ready to do what needs to be done, I'll be here, waiting, ready to take the lead and make the changes necessary to get America back on track. Until then, though (because it's going to take you lazy Wal-mart shopping fucks a while to get around to this, I know it), do what you can now. Vote for change. Vote for new leadership. The Lost Prophyt Blog officially throws its support behind BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT 2008.
It's a whole new kind of war, kids. Are you ready to fight it? Are you truly ready to see who the real enemy is? Wake up, smell the coffee, and get your heads out of your asses.

Wait A Minute
It would seem that my internet access is experiencing some down time, so posts might be few and far-between until we resolve the matter. Just wanted to let you all know...

Whodathunkit?!?
In a surprise move, straight out of left field, that not even (insert deity here) or the Psychic Friends Network could see coming, the new leader of Cuba is...
Raul Castro (FT).
This historic moment marks a first for modern Cuba: Someone other than a Castro holds a position that ends with the word President, Jose Ramon Machado being the new VP.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled Monday...

That We Could Be So Close, Like Brothers
Kosovo, 2008. The ethnic-Albanian portion of the former Yugoslavia. Site of mass genocide in the 90s under Milosevic. Afterwards, a part of Serbia. And now, they want to go it alone.
I say go for it. The Lost Prophyt Blog officially recognizes the sovereign Republic of Kosovo. Suck it, Serbs.
Why? Because if they want to, they can, its their right. If they want to govern themselves, let them. Now, settle down and let them do their thing already.
And hey, while we're at it, Kosovo might not be the only ones striking out on their own. This might sound very strange, but it's also very possible. The United States of America might have a new neighbor: The sovereign nation of... Montana?!?
Yes, it could happen. Here's a Reason Article (FT) detailing why a negative ruling by the Supreme Court could violate the terms under which the Montana State Constitution was ratified and accepted by the Feds in 1889. If that happens, Montana could very well - and more importantly, very legally - break away and become a republic of its own.
Why do I suddenly have the urge to move there?
Our world, and this time, is an interesting one to be a part of. And at the heart of it all is the Internet, bringing it to us all in real time, as things happen. It's a period in human history unlike any other, and I'm thrilled to be in the middle of it.
(And god damn, isn't it neat to watch an encyclopedia evolve? Instead of easily-outdated dead tree editions, Wikipedia is a flowing marvel of information. I highly encourage you all to keep an eye on Kosovo's entry , linked above.)
